I'm so thrilled to announce I'm officially a second Aunt as of this week. My nephew and his wife just had their first baby a couple days ago and I got to see them and meet little Aiden. That baby is so loved. Adorable! We are blessed to have this precious new member in our family! Seeing my nephew as a new Dad is heart warming and "new momma" is a such natural. So excited for them!
Been busy making a simple little crochet basket design. I've made felted crocheted bags for years now and then a follower requested a bag, not felted, to have a flat bottom and be thick enough to stand up. So after a couple searches and tries came across the details for crocheting round flat pot holders and incorporated that immediately into this new basket design.
This one made with cotton yarn is green with flecks of yellow and blue throughout. Pattern below makes a basket about 8 inches across the bottom. This one is 7 inches tall but can be any desired height.
So I want to share the pattern with you but first I need to explain how I have written it so it's easier to follow. Kinda like short hand :) Here's your guide to the pattern:

| Orange with yellow and red throughout. Also cotton yarn but will work with any worsted weight yarn. |

c = single crochet
cc = 2 single crochet in one stitch (an increase)
x = how many single crochet to make in sequence (not as an increase)
** = repeat the work between these stars
( ) = shows how many sts there should be in that round
I use a marker to keep track of the beginning of each rnd just in case I loose count or someone asks me a question...which of course never happens lol.
Yarn Basket
Using a size H crochet hook and working with 3 strands of yarn (these are made with cotton but it works with any worsted weight yarn) create a loop around your fingers and then continue as follows...
1. c x 6 in the loop (6)
2. cc x 6 (12)
3. * cc . c * (18)
4. c *cc . c x 2 * cc . c (24)
5. * c x 3 . cc * (30)
6. c x 2 * cc. c x 4 * cc . c x 2 (36)
7. * c x 5 . cc * (42)
8. c x 3 * cc . c x 6 * cc . c x 3 (48)
9. * c x 7 . cc * (54)
10. c x 4 * cc . c x 8 * cc . c x 4 (60)
11. * c x 9 . cc * ( 66)
This will give you the base for the basket. Continue around with single crochet till desired height. leave marker at bottom of basket so you know where to stop the round.
And there you have it! A yarn basket :) I imagine a grey and white striped one in a baby's room filled with lotion, powder and a hair brush....or one in the living room for cat toys...how about in the bathroom for toiletry samples so your guests have luxury choices when they visit...or just use as a beautiful/useful gift package. Also adding rope or leather handles steps up the look another notch. I promise that you will have fun making and using these baskets.
Make note that I found the flat crochet pattern on line for free under no specific domain. I just adapted it to the yarn basket pattern. So it's free to use! and share :)
